Maritime & USCG‑Regulated Roles
SCG captains only need CPR/AED and First Aid — not BLS — for their Merchant Mariner Credential (MMC). The requirement comes from 46 CFR § 28.210, which states that mariners must hold valid CPR and First Aid training from approved providers such as the American Heart Association.
AHA Heartsaver CPR/AED + First Aid fully satisfies the USCG requirement. There is no BLS requirement for OUPV, Master, or renewal applications unless an employer specifically requires it for a specialized role.
BLS is only needed if:
- Your employer mandates it, or
- You work in a medical/rescue capacity in addition to maritime duties.
For all standard captain’s licenses, CPR/AED and First Aid are sufficient and compliant with USCG regulations.
